Museum of the Charente Archaeological and Historical Society

The Museum of the Charente Archaeological and Historical Society (SAHC) is a modest yet rich cultural institution located in Angoulême, in a private mansion that also serves as the headquarters of the scholarly society founded in 1844. It features collections of archaeology, stone carvings, medieval artifacts, and decorative arts, and is open primarily by appointment (closed in July and August). It is recognized as a Musée de France.

Notable Collections

• Gallo-Roman archaeology: mosaics, sculptures, and stone lions from the ancient city of Iculisma (Roman Angoulême).
• Medieval and Romanesque stone carvings: capitals, tympanums, and architectural elements from churches and abbeys in the region, displayed in galleries, including an open-air gallery in the garden.
• Decorative arts: Limoges enamels, local earthenware, glassware, pewter, ironwork, and works by artists from the Charente region (from the Middle Ages to the 19th century).

• Opt for a guided tour if you’d like to learn about the historical context of the Gallo-Roman and medieval artifacts; local volunteers and curators are generally excellent storytellers.
• Book in advance: the museum operates by appointment, especially outside the tourist season.
