    About

In Angoulême, Julien Galon is one of the gourmet destinations where artisanal baking and patisserie come together. The shop offers both timeless classics and more personal creations, with a range stretching from Viennese pastries to patisserie, including chocolates, sweets and travel cakes. Gault&Millau particularly highlights this blend of classic recipes and contemporary creations.

    History and origins

The business was officially established on 12 June 2012. Julien Galon set up shop right in the city centre at 1 Place Francis Louvel, opposite the Courthouse. This first shop quickly became a local favourite amongst lovers of sweet treats and speciality breads.

After ten successful years in the town centre, Julien Galon decided to expand. In April 2022, he took over Josette Caillaud’s former Banette bakery, located in the vibrant Saint-Cybard neighbourhood (on the corner of the Route de Saintes). This acquisition enabled the artisan baker to increase his production capacity and reach a new local clientele.

    The expertise

Julien Galon’s work is rooted in the art of artisan baking and patisserie, with a focus on variety that goes far beyond everyday bread.

The bakery offers classic Viennese pastries and confectionery, as well as more personal creations. Gault&Millau highlights the visual quality of the products, as well as the range of chocolates, sweets and travel cakes.

The bakery’s expertise was also recognised at the 2019 Saveurs Nouvelle-Aquitaine competition, with a Bronze Saveur award for Julien Galon’s AOP butter croissant.

The bakery also deserves the attention of lovers of traditional baking: its expertise was recognised in the competition for the best galette in the Charente, where Julien Galon was among the top three in 2024.

    Products

    • Bread and bakery items. A range of breads and bakery products rounds off the bakery’s daily selection.
    • Viennoiserie. Croissants and other viennoiserie are among the classics on offer.
    • Pastries. The bakery offers classic pastries as well as more original creations. Gault&Millau describes the range as combining tradition and creativity.

    The signature product

The AOP butter croissant deserves special mention: it was awarded a Bronze Saveur at the 2019 Saveurs Nouvelle-Aquitaine competition.

To enjoy it at its best, the simplest way is to savour it fresh from the shop, accompanied by a coffee or a hot drink, whilst strolling through Angoulême’s historic centre.

    The visitor’s experience

The shop on Place Francis Louvel, in the heart of old Angoulême, is the perfect spot for a gourmet break before or after exploring the historic centre. The shop also offers takeaway options.
