Lamy Cheese Shop
About
Lamy Fromager is one of the finest gourmet destinations at the Halles d'Angoulême, in this lively setting where the market remains one of the best gateways to the culinary traditions of the Charente region. Located on Place des Halles, the shop is owned by the family-run business Lamy Fromager, which also has a location at the Halles Centrales in Limoges.
Behind the counter, Philippe Andrieux champions a generous yet exacting approach to his craft: a selection of about 150 varieties, covering France’s major cheese-producing regions, with a clear preference for the treasures of Auvergne. Saint-Nectaire, Salers, as well as Roquefort, Fourme d’Ambert, Ossau-Iraty, Langres, Saint-Félicien, and Dôme Cendré make up a particularly extensive selection.
The shop also offers a few more unique specialties, such as the Saint-Nectaire “Le Père Lamy,” aged in a natural cellar on straw and rubbed by hand, as well as a sheep’s-milk cheese infused with Espelette pepper. This pursuit of authenticity, balancing traditional aging methods with a curiosity for new flavors—is one of the shop’s main attractions.
The Experience.
More than just a quick stop to buy cheese, Lamy is a must-visit spot for putting together a tasting basket or selecting a few pieces to accompany lunch or dinner. In the spirit of the great gourmet shops, people come here as much for the variety of the selection as for the expert advice and the chance to discover less obvious cheeses.
