Bust of Marc-René de Montalembert

The bust of Marc-René de Montalembert is one of the main commemorative monuments in Ruelle-sur-Touvre. Beyond its artistic value, it serves as a reminder of the pivotal role played by the marquis in the founding of the cannon foundry that made the town a major industrial center in the Angoumois region.

History

Marc-René de Montalembert (1714–1800) was a French officer, military engineer, and inventor. In 1750, he acquired two mills on the banks of the Touvre River to establish a foundry there for producing cannons for the Royal Navy. The first casting took place in 1754. This enterprise later became the Royal Foundry, then the Ruelle Foundry, which spurred the town’s economic and demographic growth.

The idea of erecting a monument to Montalembert emerged in the early 20th century. In 1904, a committee was formed to raise funds for a bust in his honor. The Ministry of the Navy even authorized the foundry’s staff to participate in the national fundraising campaign.

Like many French bronze statues, the bust was requisitioned in 1942 during World War II as part of the Vichy regime’s effort to recover non-ferrous metals. The municipal archives preserve the official receipt confirming its removal.

The work visible today is a reconstruction installed in 1958, when the new square developed along the banks of the Touvre was completed.

Architecture and Description

The monument consists of two main elements:

• a bronze bust depicting Montalembert in 18th-century attire;
• a tall, simple, and classical stone pedestal bearing a commemorative inscription.

Its style is characteristic of commemorative sculpture from the Third Republic, emphasizing the realism of the portrait and the monumentality of the base rather than elaborate decoration.

The monument is situated in an open landscaped space, offering a view of the Touvre River and the former foundry buildings, which reinforces the symbolic link between the figure and his industrial legacy.

Heritage

The bust is part of a particularly cohesive heritage complex comprising:

• the Ruelle foundry, successor to the forge founded by Montalembert;
• the Touvre River, whose hydraulic power made it possible to establish the blast furnaces;
• Montalembert Square and Park;
• several historic features of the old town center of Ruelle-sur-Touvre.

The monument thus holds great significance as a testament to industrial history. It serves as a reminder that Montalembert’s initiative transformed a rural village into a metallurgical town whose operations spanned more than two centuries in the service of the French artillery.
