Hugo Pratt Footbridge

The Hugo Pratt Footbridge is one of Angoulême’s most iconic landmarks. Spanning the Charente River, it connects the two main sites of the Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image: the Vaisseau Mœbius, housed in the former Champigneulles brewery on the right bank, and the Comics Museum, located in the former Chais Magelis on the left bank. It serves as a pedestrian walkway, a viewpoint overlooking the Charente Valley, and a symbol of the connection between industrial heritage and contemporary creativity.

Origin and Name

The footbridge is named after Hugo Pratt (1927–1995), the Italian author known worldwide for creating the character Corto Maltese. This choice pays tribute to one of the greatest creators of the “ninth art” and highlights the international reputation of Angoulême, the French capital of comics.

In the center of the footbridge stands a bronze statue of Corto Maltese, created by sculptors Luc and Livio Benedetti. The famous sailor, with his hands behind his back and his gaze turned toward the horizon, has become one of the most photographed symbols of the “Quartier de l’Image.”

Architecture

Entirely reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, the footbridge offers a direct crossing over the Charente River between the two main areas of the Cité. Its understated design emphasizes lightness and an open view of the landscape.

The structure features discreet integrated lighting that highlights the framework and the statue of Corto Maltese while ensuring a comfortable walking experience both day and night. From the walkway, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of:
