Eaux Claires Cliff

The Eaux Claires cliff in Puymoyen, Charente, is one of the region’s premier climbing destinations, offering more than 450 routes on solid limestone suitable for all skill levels, set in a natural and protected environment.

Overview

The Eaux Claires Valley, located south of Angoulême in the town of Puymoyen, is a remarkable natural site designated as a Site of European Importance due to its biodiversity and its limestone cliffs, some of which face south and others are shaded. It stretches along the Eaux Claires stream, a 13.7-km-long tributary of the Charente River. The valley offers opportunities for rock climbing on natural cliffs and is also home to a historic mill, the Moulin du Verger. The flora is rich, featuring Mediterranean species and rare limestone grasslands.

Rock Climbing

• Rock type: very compact, sculpted limestone, ideal for “finger-style” climbing.
• Cliff height: generally between 5 and 18 m, up to 20 m depending on the sector.
• Number of routes: more than 450 equipped routes, ranging from 3c to 9a, with approximately 200 bouldering problems ranging from 4 to 8a+.
• Profile: slabs, vertical walls, overhangs, and crags. The holds are varied: holes, crimps, slabs, single-finger holds, pockets, and small footholds.
• Equipment: sport climbing gear, bolts or old pitons; a 35-meter rope is sufficient + quickdraws; slings and screw-lock carabiners recommended for the summit.
• Difficulty levels: all levels, from easy routes (4a–5c) to extreme routes (9a+). Areas suitable for beginners: Chemin des Arbres, Bloc de l’Arbre, and the right side of the main cliff.
• History: A legendary climbing spot in Charente, frequented by famous climbers such as Lionel Terray and Fred Rouhling.
