Moulin du Verger

The Moulin du Verger in Puymoyen is one of the oldest paper mills in Charente, in operation since 1539, renowned for its artisanal paper production and its historical heritage.

History

• Founded in 1539 during the reign of Francis I, the mill was completely rebuilt in 1635 by the Dutch paper merchant Deric Jansen.
• It stands as a major testament to four and a half centuries of papermaking tradition in the Charente region, featuring significant technical innovations such as the Marquis de Montalembert’s trial of the Dutch beater in 1761.
• The mill has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1991, including the workshop, the owner’s residence, the sluice gates, and the hydraulic system.

Activities and Production

• Artisanal production of handmade rag paper, made from flax and hemp, using traditional methods: casting on a mold and drying in the shade for six weeks.
• Bookbinding and book restoration workshops, offering guided tours and hands-on workshops.
• The mill currently produces papers sought after for luxury editions, combining time-honored craftsmanship with a modern water turbine.
