Château du Diable

The Château du Diable in Puymoyen is a former stronghold from the Hundred Years' War, offering a historic site and a breathtaking view of the Eaux Claires Valley.

History and Architecture

• The castle was used as a landmark by the English, nicknamed the “Red Devils,” during the Hundred Years’ War and was demolished several times throughout its history, gradually losing its appearance as a classic fortress.
• All that remains of the 16th-century residence is a vast room with a broken barrel vault, typical of the manor houses of the Angoumois region.
• The castle’s main gate is adorned with two devil sculptures created in 1937 by Mr. Boeglen, which appear to be “standing guard.”
• There is also mention of the remains of a tower and extensive underground passages, as well as evidence of troglodytic occupation during various periods, including by monks and journeymen of the Tour de France.

• The castle is situated on a ridge in the Eaux Claires Valley, offering an exceptional panoramic view of the limestone valley of Puymoyen.

• Access is via the trails around Puymoyen, notably the Michel Desprez loop in the Eaux Claires Valley.
