Beaulieu Rampart

The Beaulieu rampart is one of the most remarkable sections of Angoulême’s city walls. Located on the northwestern flank of the historic plateau, it offers a panoramic view of the Charente Valley and illustrates more than 1,600 years of evolution in the city’s fortifications.

History

Angoulême’s earliest fortifications date back to the late 3rd or early 4th century, when the Gallo-Roman city of Iculisma built a wall to protect its inhabitants from invasions. The plateau’s location, towering nearly 80 meters above the Charente and Anguienne valleys, made it an exceptional defensive site.

In the 9th century, Count Vulgrin had the ramparts restored to withstand Viking raids. The fortifications were then expanded in the 12th and 13th centuries, keeping pace with the growth of the medieval city. In the late 16th century and throughout the 17th century, under the rule of the Duke of Épernon, several sections were modernized to counter advances in artillery.

Beginning in the 18th century, the walls lost their military function. The gates were gradually demolished, and the ramparts were leveled to allow for urban expansion. The promenades built along their former path then became a major feature of Angoulême’s landscape.

Architecture

The Beaulieu rampart is characteristic of the various successive construction campaigns:

• a base inherited from the ancient enclosure, built of large limestone blocks;
• medieval reconstructions reinforced by semi-cylindrical towers;
• 16th- and 17th-century modifications designed to improve defense against firearms.

The walls follow the natural edge of the plateau, using the cliffs as a defensive barrier. Today, the parapets serve more as a promenade than as a military fortification.

The Beaulieu Rampart

The name Beaulieu refers to the western section of the ramparts. This promenade is renowned for its sweeping panoramic view of:

• the Charente Valley;
• the wooded hillsides;
• the Angoulême golf course;
• the lower districts of the city.

Today, the rampart is part of a tourist route that circles the entire old town. It is often described as the “balcony of Angoulême” because the views from there are so unobstructed.

Heritage

The ramparts of Angoulême, of which the Beaulieu rampart is a part, have been listed as Historic Monuments since December 18, 1958. They constitute one of the main elements of the city’s urban heritage, along with Saint-Pierre Cathedral and the former count’s castle.

Today, the Beaulieu rampart holds several heritage values:

• historical, as a testament to Angoulême’s successive fortifications;
• architectural, due to the coexistence of ancient, medieval, and modern remains;
• landscape, thanks to the views of the Charente Valley;
• touristic, as they are an essential stop on the ramparts walk.

In short, the Beaulieu rampart is much more than an ancient defensive wall: it is a place where nearly sixteen centuries of military history, urban development, and landscape design come to life, while offering one of the most beautiful views of Angoulême and the Charente Valley.
